  • Opera, the browser with a small desktop market share but huge mobile market share, particularly in developing and less-opulent countries, has confirmed today that they will start implementing support for the -webkit- prefix.

When one portion of this industry comes around to doing things right, it upsets one of the other portions, which compensates, sometimes as poorly as the US economy.

Ugh. What's an also-ran web browser to do?

FRANKFURT — He designed Porsche's classic 911 sports car — the sleek model that evokes power, wealth and envy among aficionados — cementing his grandfather's name into the modern psyche

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche died Thursday in Salzburg, Austria at age 76, Porsche AG said. No cause was provided.

Porsche, known as F.A. to his colleagues, was head of the Porsche design studio in the early 1960s when the company developed the 911 model that remains its brand-defining product. The car, now in its seventh version, remains recognizably the same vehicle, with its sloping roofline, long, low hood and prominent headlights.

"The creator of the Porsche 911 has founded a culture of design in our company that distinguishes our sports cars even today," Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller said.

Porsche. An end of an era.

Rallying and stunt-driving legend Ken Block joins James May on a rather quiet airfield in California. Quiet that is until he turns the airfield into a playground and shows off his Sabaru-sliding skills against dirt-biking champion Ricky Carmichael!

So, as far as I know, a bus hasn't been pushed to such levels, but it could be done.

    Right, Marty?

It's the battle of 1986: The best Shelby "Goes Like Hell" Dodge extant or a four-wheel-drive Volkswagen Vanagon powered by a flat six from a Porsche 911. Both of these awesome rides popped up in our inbox this morning, thanks to our favorite automotive classifieds site, Bring A Trailer. Argument ensued, with good cases made for both.

The Shelby Dodge is, of course, based on the Omni econobox. But with a turbocharged 2.2-liter four making 175 horsepower and a curb weight around 2,200 pounds, the GLHS was a real performance car. With a bit of tuning, the turbo Dodge engines were capable of topping 200 hp; this in an era in which V8 Ford Mustang GT's were barely pumping out 200 horses. Given that only 500 Shelby GLHS's were built, we've got to imagine you'd be hard-pressed to find a better example than this one, claimed to have just 6,600 miles on the odo. It's for sale by a Michigan dealer on eBay.

The Vanagon is the sort of project we all dream of undertaking in our backyards. With a 3.2-liter, air-cooled six pulled from an '89 911, we don't imagine this Syncro will have any problems making it up any mountain passes. Dumping the VW wasserboxer is a favorite Vanagon owner pastime, and given the historic relationship between the companies, we think it's only right to source Porsche power rather than the more common Subaru engine swap. The Syncro is for sale on TheSamba.com.

So help us resolve the Autoblog Staff Argument of the Day and vote in our poll, and click on the galleries below to see lots of photos of these two sweet vehicles.

Go vote in the survey, it's neck and neck.

Which one did you choose? Why?

  • High unemployment, stricter lending rules and fears that prices will fall further are among the reasons why few people are buying and selling homes. A record number of foreclosures are forcing down home prices in most metro areas, and prices are expected to keep falling through this year.

Hello, everyone. I'm an Apple user.

My name is Luke Dorny and I started working at Newsvine last week as your new designer.

I spent most of my formative years in the Northwest in the eighties and am very happy that we're returning to the Seattle area. We love this area. We are currently making the transition from Long Beach, California and the 70ºF winter weather into the 40ºs and "humidity" that I remember so well. I've travelled some in my life and plan to do more, but I prefer the forest to the desert, so we're very happy to return here.

I've studied at University of California Los Angeles, and have been involved with design most of my life. It began in print and package design but has mostly been web technology for the last fifteen years.

Also, I love me some skateboarding, snowboarding, technology-related news, old mechanical items that predate the digital world, as well as travel and foreign culture. My wife's family is from Holland and my family is from Northern Europe, especially Denmark. We have three small children, one boy and twin girls, and no doubt there will be links to my flickr site with photos of them to follow.

I'm excited to get started on a few things but give me some time to coordinate with the team as I become more acquainted with the Vine and some of the many unique qualities here. You have all created a very interesting world of editorial and commentary and I intend to support you all with additions and revisions to the experience. With the group I'm in now at Newsvine Headquarters, I'm sure that many things will be possible. Please be patient with us. I appreciate your support.

I don't plan on being a stranger, so introduce yourself to me as well, and we'll see you around the 'Vine (probably not proper).
