Hello, everyone. I'm an Apple user.

My name is Luke Dorny and I started working at Newsvine last week as your new designer.

I spent most of my formative years in the Northwest in the eighties and am very happy that we're returning to the Seattle area. We love this area. We are currently making the transition from Long Beach, California and the 70ºF winter weather into the 40ºs and "humidity" that I remember so well. I've travelled some in my life and plan to do more, but I prefer the forest to the desert, so we're very happy to return here.

I've studied at University of California Los Angeles, and have been involved with design most of my life. It began in print and package design but has mostly been web technology for the last fifteen years.

Also, I love me some skateboarding, snowboarding, technology-related news, old mechanical items that predate the digital world, as well as travel and foreign culture. My wife's family is from Holland and my family is from Northern Europe, especially Denmark. We have three small children, one boy and twin girls, and no doubt there will be links to my flickr site with photos of them to follow.

I'm excited to get started on a few things but give me some time to coordinate with the team as I become more acquainted with the Vine and some of the many unique qualities here. You have all created a very interesting world of editorial and commentary and I intend to support you all with additions and revisions to the experience. With the group I'm in now at Newsvine Headquarters, I'm sure that many things will be possible. Please be patient with us. I appreciate your support.

I don't plan on being a stranger, so introduce yourself to me as well, and we'll see you around the 'Vine (probably not proper).

"We" used to be rare, quirky, scoffed at, ignored, and belittled. Now we are legion.

Not that I need a sticker on my bumper…

To be fair, we're often still scoffed at and belittled, even here. :)

I see they finally put you through whatever hazing ceremony it takes to get a green comment.

Actually, the hazing has yet to happen. That, or it was invisible and I'll find out later. :|

Not really related, but *nudge*nudge* when's the rollout for us lesser mortals?

No, it's a lie. The CSS is trying to look like borderless tables, don't believe it.

Impending.

From Merriam-Webster:

Definition of IMPEND
intransitive verb

1 a : to hover threateningly : menace

b : to be about to occur <the impending trial>

2 archaic : to hang suspended

Examples of IMPEND
<for confirmed pessimists some disaster always seems to be impending>

Welcome Luke...

You have me thinking Star Wars. Not too much, tho, I'm not a huge fan. I'm just picturing you designing Newsvine with a light-sabre (or whatever it's called) and having a little robot side-kick. :)

Someday, maybe you'll come up with an easy way to design the columns for the techno-illiterati like me..I like Viki's style and yours without the lines.

Some of the issue of why I haven't customized is simply ...I just don't know what to display. I do like a simple look, so if there isn't a lot there - maybe that's Ok. ..Nice to meet you, and good luck!

Yes, arriving at something you like to represent yourself is infinitely difficult at times.

Thank you for your reply, Luke.

Your words are quite profound. So true. Finding what is exactly right in representing ourselves in 'every aspect of our lives' is not only "infinitely difficult at times," we often overlook it's importance. ..Just the 'little' expressions - that can make 'big' impressions.

So now, Luke, you get to see the dark side of Newsvine. Spikegary - despite being my friend - has never made me any apple fritters. The pain is almost too much to bear. And no, a cool graphic design of an apple fritter isn't going to get me over it, unless you can make it scratch n sniff.
